Allotments

alotment

Formed in November 2008  we now have 34 members with a good mix of allotment holders and leisure gardeners.

Membership is £5 per year. Benefits to members include 40% off Kings seeds, 10% off plants from Hattens Nursery.

The broad aims of the Association are to:

  • unite people with a common interest in gardening
  • organise speakers and social events
  • raise money for projects identified by members
  • encourage more people to engage in an outdoor lifestyle
  • promote fresh, local produce

If you would like to know more about the Association or to join, please contact us on metfieldweb@googlemail.com

Work on the allotments never stops. Andy's lines of drying onions are guarded by the scarecrow and Dan and Jo's bees pollinate and make honey. Fine fences, chicken wire, canes, netting, hoops, plastic sheets and cardboard are all employed in the production of vegetables and fruit for much of the year. And, if you get lonely, you can always talk to the chickens…

Community Orchard planting February 2012

Community Orchard planting February 2012

ochard

We now have a wonderful community plot which is the base for all our social events – BBQs, bring and share lunches, Souper Sundays – any excuse for a get together! On the plot are 9 small raised beds for those who want to be part of the allotment community and grow some flowers or veg but don't want a to take on a full allotment.

Our latest project has been creating a Community Orchard with a great variety of fruit trees and many heritage varieties. Traditional orchard fruits such as apple, plum, pear and greengage are supplemented by apricot, peach, almond, cherry and many more. In addition we have an “edible hedge” supplied by the Woodland Trust with hazel, wild plums. We had a fantastic (wet) planting day with help from 15 volunteers from British Telecom – we are waiting now for the trees to establish and looking forward to the harvests to come!
